🧭 Ask Your Coach
Got a question about training, sea swimming, technique, or anything else?
Leave a comment with your question below, or ask one of us at a session, we’ll answer one question each month in this section.
This month’s question:
❓How much does having a routine actually help my swimming?
Routine is what turns good intentions into progress.
It’s not about being rigid or perfect, it’s about giving your body and mind the consistency they need to improve.
When you swim at regular times, your body starts to anticipate effort and recovery. You move more efficiently, settle into rhythm faster, and notice that your fitness, strength, and confidence build steadily over time.
Routine also helps reduce decision fatigue. If you know which days you swim, there’s less space for hesitation or excuses - it simply becomes part of your week, like brushing your teeth or making your morning coffee.
And when life gets busy (as it inevitably does), having that structure makes it easier to adapt rather than abandon. You can adjust, rather than quit - whether that means swapping a session, shortening it, or doing some land-based work instead.
If you’re trying to build a more consistent swimming routine, start small. Choose one or two sessions each week that are non-negotiable, and protect that time. Over time, the habit becomes second nature, the rhythm starts to stick, and you’ll start to notice the difference.

For most of her life, Louiza was afraid of deep water - a fear passed down from her mum, who still asks her why she’d ever do something “so dangerous.”
But four years ago, alongside her friend, Purdy, she decided to face that fear and joined her first Ace Swimming group session. At the time, she didn’t have a clear goal, she thought the sessions might run for a few months, then stop for winter. But when the sessions kept going year-round, Louiza kept showing up, and hasn’t stopped since.
The group quickly became her biggest source of support. Everyone encouraged and cheered each other on, and what started as a challenge soon became a social joy. Louiza found new friends, learned to swim, and built confidence she never thought she’d have in the water.
This year, she took on her biggest challenge yet…the Drake’s Island Swim. Following the Ace Swimming online programme and putting in the training, she crossed the finish line - a milestone that once felt unachievable.
In Louiza’s words:
“Being in the sea gives me so much joy, makes me feel fantastic, and I notice it when I haven’t been for a while.”
We’re so proud of Louiza’s courage, consistency, and the joy she brings to every swim.
